Lee Barry Cattermole (born March 21, 1988 in Stockton-on-Tees ) is an English football player .

Career

Lee Cattermole was born in the English industrial town of Stockton-on-Tees and has played for Middlesbrough FC since he was seven . There he went through all youth teams before making his debut for the first team on December 15, 2005 at the age of 17. In the UEFA Cup game against Litex Lovech Cattermole was 83 minutes for Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink off the bench.

Cattermole made his Premier League debut on January 2, 2006 in a derby against Newcastle United . With an outstanding performance he was then named "Man of the match". Until the end of the season, Cattermole played regularly for his team. In the UEFA Cup final against Sevilla FC , he was substituted on after 85 minutes when the score was 3-0. On April 2, 2006, he scored his first goal for Middlesbrough with the 1-0 winner against Manchester City . In the game against Fulham on May 7, 2006 Cattermole was captain for the first time, making him the youngest captain of Middlesbrough FC ever.

In the 2006/2007 season, Cattermole finally made the breakthrough and became a regular player. He completed 31 games for his team and scored two goals. In October he was called up for the first time in the squad of the English U21 national team for games against Germany and the Netherlands , but did not play.

Meanwhile, "Super Lee" has established itself and is one of the fans' favorites. On October 20, 2006, Cattermole signed a four-year contract with Middlesbrough FC, tying himself long-term to the club where he has been active since his youth. Nevertheless, Cattermole left Middlesbrough FC early on July 29, 2008 and signed a new contract with Wigan Athletic over a period of three years for a transfer fee of £ 2.5 million .

At Wigan, he performed well during his first season. Many other clubs then became aware of him. In August 2009, Cattermole moved to Sunderland AFC for 7 million euros . After more than 10 years and two relegations to the third-class Football League One with Sunderland, he moved to the Dutch first division club VVV Venlo in August 2019 .
