Thorsten Kirschbaum (born April 20, 1987 in Würzburg ) is a German soccer goalkeeper . He has been under contract with the Dutch first division club VVV-Venlo since the 2019/20 season .

Career

Thorsten Kirschbaum began his career at TSV Obernzenn . From 1999 to 2004 he played for 1. FC Nürnberg . For the 2004/05 season he moved to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim , where he was part of the professional squad from 2006. In the 2006/07 season he played there as a regular goalkeeper the first eight appearances in the Regionalliga Süd. After an elbow injury, he was replaced by Daniel Haas and was unable to regain his regular position. He played a total of nine regional league games. On December 16, 2007, he made his debut in the 2nd Bundesliga when he came on for the injured Haas at halftime in the game against SpVgg Greuther Fürth .

In January 2009 he moved to Liechtenstein for FC Vaduz , which is active in Swiss leagues. After the club was relegated from the Swiss first division, Kirschbaum decided to terminate the contract. Since no other club wanted to sign him during the summer break, the goalkeeper at Bayern league club SpVgg Ansbach 09 kept fit. In October 2009, Kirschbaum was signed by SV Sandhausen , where he replaced the original number one Michael Gurski in the third division from matchday 18 . For the 2010/11 season, Kirschbaum moved as the new number one to the second division Energie Cottbus , where he signed a three-year contract.

On March 10, 2013, Kirschbaum signed a three-year contract with VfB Stuttgart , which came into force for the 2013/14 season .

As a substitute for the regular goalkeeper Sven Ulreich , Kirschbaum played for the first time in the VfB Stuttgart jersey on matchday 8 of the 2013/14 Bundesliga season. On the 6th match day of the 2014/15 season, Armin Veh made him the new number 1 at VfB Stuttgart.

Kirschbaum switched back to his youth club 1. FC Nürnberg on July 1, 2015. In total, Kirchbaum played twelve games for the club in the first half of the 2015/16 season , but was no longer used in the second half , not even when Raphael Schäfer was injured.

In the 2016/17 season he fought back to his regular place and was chosen by the fans as the “Cluberer of the first half of the season” due to consistently good performances - including several penalties. Kirschbaum also made two appearances in the regional league team. In the 2017/18 season , however, the new goalkeeper Fabian Bredlow became the regular goalkeeper. With 1. FC Nürnberg he was runner-up in the 2. Bundesliga and was promoted to the Bundesliga .

For the 2018/19 season he made a free transfer to Bayer 04 Leverkusen . The one-year contract was not extended.

For the season 2019/20 to cherry closed in the Netherlands the first division side VVV-Venlo on.

National team

Kirschbaum made seven appearances in the German U-21 national team from 2007 to 2008 . He made his debut on February 6, 2007 against Scotland when he came on for Manuel Neuer in the second half .
