Gelmi took his first steps in football at the age of six at FC Bassersdorf. At the age of eleven, he switched to the junior division of FC Zurich . Three years later he moved to the youth department of FC St. Gallen . There he graduated from the football academy and also graduated from high school, which he graduated with the Matura in 2013 . In 2013 he played his first games in the second team of FC St. Gallen. He made his debut in the first team on May 10, 2015 in the game against BSC Young Boys . He signed a professional contract for the 2015/16 season , limited to June 2018. He scored his first goal on September 22, 2015 in the championship game against FC Thun in the 85th minute with the 1-0 winning goal. Despite the current contract, he moved to FC Thun on July 11, 2017. On April 23, 2019, he scored the decisive goal for the 1-0 victory of the Bernese Oberlanders in the Cup semi-final away against FC Luzern , thus securing the second place in the final in the club's history after 1955.

Roy Gelmi debuted on October 12, 2015, the U-21 national team of Switzerland in qualifying for the U-21 European Championship in 2017 at 1: 1 against Norway.
