The FC Vaduz is the Soccer Team of Liechtenstein main town Vaduz and member of both the Liechtenstein Football Association (LFV) and the Swiss Football Association (SFV) . After playing in the top Swiss football league between 2014 and 2017 , the first team was relegated in the 2016/17 season and played in the Challenge League , the second top division in Switzerland. In 2020 the club rose again to the Super League .

FC Vaduz has won the Liechtenstein cup competition 47 times, most recently seven times in a row from 2013 to 2019. The club has around 630 members and the club colors are red and white.

history

There was a founding meeting for the club in December 1931, after the Vaduz municipal council had decided to build a football field. The first verifiable document about the foundation is dated February 14, 1932, which is why this date is used by the association as the foundation date. FC Vaduz initially joined the Vorarlberg Football Association , but only one year later switched to the game operations of the Swiss Football and Athletics Association , today's Swiss Football Association (SFV). The FCV achieved their first major success in 1996, at that time still in the 1st division of the SFV (third highest division), with the victory against the Latvian opponent FC Universitāte Rīga (1: 1 two-way leg, Vaduz then won 4: 2 on penalties ) in the European Cup Winners' Cup . So you had qualified for the 1st main round, where you were eliminated against the eventual finalist Paris St. Germain.

In 2001 FC Vaduz was promoted to National League B , the second highest Swiss league. In the following years, promotion to the highest Swiss league, the Super League , was on the program. In both 2004 and 2005 the club reached the Barrage , but failed there. For the 2005/06 season was Mats Gren committed as a coach. In the first round of the 2006/07 UEFA Cup qualification , FC Vaduz defeated Moldovan opponents FC Dacia Chișinău . In the second round they met the Istanbul club Beşiktaş Istanbul , against whom they were eliminated.

In 2008 (i.e. in the 2007/08 season ), FC Vaduz's long-standing dream finally came true. After seven years in the Challenge League , FCV was promoted to the Axpo Super League as champions of the Challenge League on May 12, 2008 . This was the first time that a foreign club was represented in the highest Swiss league.

In mid-2008 the question arose whether FC Vaduz should still be allowed to participate as a non-Swiss club after the contract expired in 2010 . This question was particularly explosive because FC Vaduz was playing in the Axpo Super League for the first time at this time.

In June 2009 the Swiss Football Association made the fundamental decision that FC Vaduz should continue to be able to participate in the championship of the Super League and the Challenge League.

In May 2010, the two Liechtenstein teams, FC Vaduz and USV Eschen-Mauren, decided to work better together, especially with regard to the exchange and development opportunities for the players of both teams. In principle, the agreement was intended to replace the missing substructure at FC Vaduz and promote cooperation in the interests of Liechtenstein football. FC Vaduz is the first address for professional footballers.

The club was able to win the Liechtenstein Cup 47 times, from 1998 to 2011 fourteen times in a row, which means that it is almost constantly represented in the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Europa League . In 2006, FC Vaduz won the cup final against FC Balzers only after extra time (4: 2; 2: 2 after regular time). In 2007, FC Vaduz won the cup final against FC Ruggell 8-0. The 2008 final did not come as a surprise either: FC Balzers were defeated 4-0. In 2010 the final game against USV Eschen-Mauren was only decided on penalties. This was 5: 3 for the FCV. In 2011 they won 5-0 against USV Eschen-Mauren. In 2012, however, there was a big surprise when USV Eschen-Mauren stopped FC Vaduz's winning streak with a win on penalties.

On November 12, 2012, due to the negative development in the 2011/12 season , Vaduz separated from his coach Erik Orie and his assistant coach Martin Schneider with immediate effect. The training was taken over on an interim basis by goalkeeping coach Sebastian Selke . A few days later, the club announced the commitment of the new coach Giorgio Contini , who signed a contract until the summer of 2014. In September 2013, Ruth Ospelt, a new president of the association, was elected at the general assembly. Under her leadership, the club achieved the second promotion in history to the highest Swiss league, the Super League, in the 2013/14 season . The following season could be finished with 31 points from 36 games in 9th place. The league was secured on the penultimate matchday.

On March 7, 2017, FC Vaduz parted ways with long-time coach Giorgio Contini . Two weeks later, on March 22, 2017, Roland Vrabec was introduced as the new trainer. But he could no longer prevent the descent. In the first season after relegation, FC Vaduz finished fourth. In September 2018, Vrabec was dismissed due to moderate results and replaced by the former Liechtenstein national player Mario Frick . Under Frick, the Liechtensteiners improved by 2 points to sixth.
