career

Player career

Gren started playing soccer at Falu BS in his hometown. There he made his debut in the men's team in 1982 and made promotion to Division 3 Södra Norrland with the club . There, too, the championship succeeded, only in the promotion games against Nyköpings BIS the march into the second division was missed. A year later the relay win was repeated and after they had prevailed against Råsunda IS thanks to the away goals rule , the way to the second division was free. However, Gren left the club to join IFK Göteborg in Allsvenskan . With the club he was Swedish champion in 1984.

In 1985, Gren moved to Grasshopper Club Zurich, Switzerland . In his first game for the new employer - a cup game against BSC Young Boys - Gren scored four goals. He played 427 games for the Hoppers in the following 14 years, scoring 45 goals. Gren was used in every position at least once (even a few minutes as a goalkeeper) and has been libero and team captain in recent years . Until 2000 he remained loyal to the club and was able to win several titles. He was Swiss champion five times and triumphed in the Swiss Cup four times.

On June 26, 1984 Gren made his debut in the Swedish national team when they played in Milan against Italy and lost 1-0 through a goal by Antonio Cabrini in the second minute of the game. In the following years he was one of the regular team members before he disappeared from the field of vision of national coach Lars Arnesson after moving to Switzerland . On October 14, 1987, he celebrated by Olle Nordin his return to the National Dress as you look in Gelsenkirchen Park Stadium 1: 1 draw from the West German national selection separated. However, he was only irregularly on the field for the national team. Although he was not used in preparation for the 1990 World Cup , he was still part of the national team at the tournament and came in the 1: 2 defeat in the final group game against Costa Rica as a substitute for Tomas Brolin to a tournament. Until his last appearance on April 22, 1992 against Tunisia , he was used in a total of 23 games, a goal he was denied.

Coaching career

After the end of his active career, Gren was initially a youth coach at FC Altstetten. A year later he moved to the same position at FC Winterthur . He returned to the Grasshoppers via FC Vaduz , his first coaching position in adult football , where he succeeded Murat Yakin as assistant coach to Hans-Peter Latour .

In July 2009 Gren resigned from his position as assistant coach and took over as chief coach of the Danish club Vejle BK , which had been relegated to the second-class 1st division . Since the 2012 season he has been coach at Jönköpings Södra IF in the Swedish second division Superettan .
