The FC Schaffhausen was 1896 - on an evening of entertainment on the Munot - founded as a "football club Viktoria" and one of the oldest Swiss football clubs : There are only eight still existing clubs that were established earlier.

history

The first club president was the Schaffhausen businessman Robert Sturzenegger , brother of the well-known painter Hans . From 1902 the club - which fought for its survival for many years - then traded under the name "Football Club Schaffhausen", later under "United Football Club of Schaffhausen" and between 1915 and 1936 under "United FC Schaffhausen-Sparta", before his today's name. While the club did not have a place of its own until the 1920s, it was accepted into the Swiss Football Association in the spring of 1901 .

The Schaffhausen players have belonged to the second highest division for 54 seasons and played in the National League A from 1955 to 1957, 1961/62 and 1963/64 . After being promoted again in 2004, FC Schaffhausen had to relegate in the summer of 2007 and are now playing in the Challenge League , the second-highest division in Switzerland.

On March 21, 2007, FC Schaffhausen parted ways with their long-time coach Jürgen Seeberger . He was head coach at FC Schaffhausen for the 7th season and led the team from the 1st division to the Axpo Super League . Marco Schällibaum then took over the coaching position and fought with the team against relegation to the Challenge League . This could not be prevented, however, as they lost 2-0 to FC Thun in the last game . Another low point in the history of the club of FC Schaffhausen followed in the 2010/11 season, when FCS lost 3-2 in the penultimate round in the game against Stade Nyonnais and was therefore relegated to the first division .

On April 29, 2013 it was announced that FC Schaffhausen met all 6 criteria (law, infrastructure, sport, administration, finance and security) required to secure the gaming license for the Challenge League. In the last game of the 12/13 season, the FCS managed to return to the Challenge League.

Aniello Fontana was president and sponsor of FC Schaffhausen from 1991 until his death in January 2019 . He was the driving force behind the construction of the new Lipo-Park stadium , which opened in early January 2017 and replaced the previous Breite stadium .

In May 2019, FC Schaffhausen hit the headlines after fans from the so-called beer curve held up a banner with the words “Winti Fraue figge und beat” (“Winterthur women fuck and beat up”) during a game against FC Winterthur . This led to outrage across the country, and the Zurich canton police arrested four men - including the club's security chief - as part of a criminal investigation into public calls for crimes or violence.
