Career

In the club

Fabio Coltorti 2011

Fabio Coltorti began his career in 1987 at SC Kriens , a typical training club with one of the largest youth departments in Switzerland. With Kriens, he made it to the National League A in 1996/97 , from which Kriens was relegated again after one season . In 2001 Coltorti moved to FC Schaffhausen and played here for two years. 2003 he transferred to FC Thun , where he in 2004 in the UEFA Intertoto Cup played. In 2005 he was runner-up in the Super League with Thun . In the same year he moved to the Grasshopper Club Zurich . In both 2005/06 and 2006/07 he played with the GCZ in the UEFA Cup. On August 28, 2007, Fabio Coltorti signed a four-year contract with the Spanish football club Racing Santander . After the end of his contract, Coltorti moved to the 2011/12 season for Super League promoted FC Lausanne-Sport .

RB Leipzig

After the 2011/12 season Coltorti moved abroad again, to the German regional league club RB Leipzig . He was a regular player right from the start, stood between the posts in 26 of 30 games and took first place in the Regionalliga Nordost with Leipzig. After two relegation games against  Sportfreunde Lotte  , RB rose to the 3rd division . Coltorti also went into the following third division season as number 1. On the 17th matchday he tore an inner ligament in the home game against Hansa Rostock and was out for four months. Despite the good performance of Benjamin Bellot , who represented him , coach Alexander Zorniger stuck to him as number 1. Coltorti returned to the starting line-up on matchday 34 and celebrated their march through to the 2nd Bundesliga with the Leipzig team at the end of the season .

Shortly before the start of the second division season, Coltorti injured his right knee again and this time tore his inner ligament. He was therefore out of the first ten match days. From then on he was on the field 21 times in a row. On April 24, 2015 Coltorti scored the 2-1 winning goal against SV Darmstadt 98 in stoppage time . He had run to a corner because Leipzig still had the chance to move up and needed three points. The last three games Coltorti fell again due to injury. At the end of the season he finished fifth with the team.

In the 2015/16 season Coltorti was again number one in goal for RB Leipzig. On February 7, 2016, he injured his shoulder in the game against Eintracht Braunschweig and was replaced by Péter Gulácsi . Gulácsi represented Coltorti until the end of the season. Only in the last home game against Karlsruher SC on May 8, 2016 Coltorti was in goal again. With the promotion due to the victory, his contract was extended for another year until the end of the 2016/17 season. In the following season Coltorti did not play for the first time until the second half of the season on April 1, 2017 instead of the sick Péter Gulácsi, which meant his debut in the first Bundesliga at the age of 36 years. At the end of the 2017/18 season, his contract with RB Leipzig, which was about to expire, was initially not extended after a season without playing in the Bundesliga, later Ralf Rangnick announced on August 14, 2018 at a fan event that Coltorti would receive a new contract until 2019. After talks with Ralf Rangnick, however, Fabio Coltorti decided in August 2018 to end his footballing career at the age of 37.

National team

Coltorti made his national team debut on March 1, 2006 in an away game against hosts Scotland. Then he played another friendly against Italy when he into the squad of the national team for the World Cup was appointed; as number 2 behind Pascal Zuberbühler and in front of Diego Benaglio he was not used.

After the World Cup he played six more times for the national team. He was again nominated as the second goalkeeper for the 2008 European Championship , but had to cancel because of a post-viral fatigue syndrome . Eldin Jakupović was nominated for him .
