Péter Gulácsi (born May 6, 1990 in Budapest ) is a Hungarian football goalkeeper who has been active for RB Leipzig since summer 2015 .

Club career

Career start in Budapest

Gulácsi, who was born in the Hungarian capital Budapest, began his active career as a football goalkeeper in the youth division of his home club Budapesti VSC . There he went through various youth league classes from 1995 to 2003 and gained the attention of MTK Budapest FC , also located in the capital , in whose youth department he changed with immediate effect. At MTK he was active in various youth teams, later trained in the club's reserve team and was the third goalkeeper in the squad of the professional team behind veteran Zoltán Végh and Zoltán Szatmári from the 2007/08 season .

When the professionals became Hungarian champions for the 23rd time, Zoltán Végh was in goal at all championship games of his team this season, with the exception of one encounter, Gulácsi was not used in the reserve or the professional team, but mainly trained in the club's junior division. The talent of the committed young goalkeeper quickly spread beyond the borders of Hungary, which is why Gulácsi quickly became a much sought-after player.

Move to England

Péter Gulácsi in 2011

In August 2007, Péter Gulácsi moved to England on loan, where the Premier League club Liverpool had equipped him with a one-year loan deal. Together with the fixed commitment, the Spaniard Mikel San José , Gulácsi moved to the English first division, where both players were initially intended for the reserve team. In the Premier Reserve League , the young Hungarian national player prevailed and was a key figure in the fight for the championship title in the 2007/08 season. The team secured this after having suffered only one defeat in 18 league games and only eight goals conceded over the entire season, with a 4-0 win in the final against the reserve team from Aston Villa . Since he was convincing at Liverpool FC Reserves, he was offered a permanent contract with the Reds at the end of his loan transfer , which the Hungarian also accepted. After he signed the contract at the end of August 2008, the contract, which expired in 2010, was extended in August 2009 for a further four years until summer 2013. Gulácsi, who until then had been almost exclusively in the reserve team, had already been loaned to the then third division Hereford United in early February 2009 until the beginning of May . The Hungarian made his professional league debut on February 14, 2009 in a 3-2 away win over Cheltenham Town . In the second encounter, a 2-0 win over Leeds United , he parried a penalty shot. Nevertheless, Péter Gulácsi could not prevent the relegation of Hereford United as last-placed in League One at the end of the 2008/09 season after the team stayed only a single season in the third division. By the end of the season, he made 18 league appearances for Hereford.

After his return to Liverpool in May, the goalkeeper was only used in the reserve team of the Reds , which ended their season in the same month. The professionals, where Gulácsi sat on the bench in two league games throughout the season, were four points behind Manchester United runners-up in the Premier League. In the following season, Gulácsi completed games for Liverpool FC Reserves before he was awarded on April 16, 2010 for a week as an "emergency transfer" to the Tranmere Rovers . After making his team debut in a 3-1 win over Exeter City on April 17, his loan deal was reduced by one on April 23 , due to the fact that the two actual goalkeepers Luke Daniels and Joe Collister were still out of play due to injury extended another week. After another week with Tranmere Rovers, his contract was extended for a third week. During these three weeks with the team from the port city of Birkenhead , the Hungarian U21 team player had five league games. After his return to Liverpool he was henceforth again for the reserve team before he moved again on loan to the Tranmere Rovers in September, since the two actual goalkeepers Gunnar Nielsen and Simon Miotto were injured; the early loan period was one month. After the goalkeeper stood out for his performances in that one month and met the expectations of his coach Les Parry , his contract was prematurely extended for another month. Before returning to Mersey for Liverpool in November , he played twelve championship games for the Rovers. At the Reds he was then only to be found in the reserve team, but sat on the substitute bench of the professional team in 19 league games throughout the 2010/11 season .

During the summer break before the start of the 2011/12 season, Péter Gulácsi moved on loan from the northwest of England to the northeast of the island, to Kingston upon Hull for the second division club Hull City . With the Tigers he received a loan contract with a term of one year. He was used as a regular from the start of the season and played his first game on August 5, 2011 in the season opener against Blackpool FC at the KC Stadium . On December 31, 2011, Gulácsi suffered a knee injury in the 1-0 defeat by Burnley FC in a collision with Burnley striker Jack Hobbs . Due to this injury, the Hungarian had to undergo an examination at his home club Liverpool and was sidelined until April 2012. In the game, Gulácsi was replaced by Brazilian Adriano Basso , who was also struggling with knee problems at the time. Since the professional squad of Hull City was densely filled with goalkeepers (in addition to Gulácsi and Basso there were also Joe Cracknell , Vito Mannone , Mark Oxley and Robert Peet ), a replacement could be accessed, although initially there were talk of goalkeeping problems, as there were Sometimes Mark Oxley recovered from an injury and there was also a possible loan from Newcastle United legend Steve Harper or Dorus de Vries for a short time . Until his protracted injury, the Hungarian U21 team player had made 15 league appearances for the Tigers . On April 11, 2012 it was announced that Gulácsi could prematurely end his loan period at Hull City and return to Liverpool due to the goalkeeper shortage at Liverpool FC.

Red Bull Salzburg

Gulácsi warming up

In June 2013 Gulácsi signed a contract with FC Red Bull Salzburg until June 30, 2017 . He was appointed goalkeeper for the 2013/14 season. At the end of the season, his achievements were recognized by a jury made up of presidents, managers and coaches from all clubs in the Bundesliga, who voted him “the best goalie of the season”.

At the end of the season he moved to Germany for RB Leipzig.

RB Leipzig

On October 27, 2015, Péter Gulácsi made his competitive debut with the Leipzigers in the second round of the DFB Cup, the game was lost 3-0 at SpVgg Unterhaching, and they were eliminated from the current competition. The Hungarian made his first appearance in the 2nd Bundesliga on February 7, 2016, when he came on in the 33rd minute for goalkeeper Fabio Coltorti, who was injured on the shoulder . He made his Bundesliga debut after the team's promotion on August 28, 2016 (1st matchday) in a 2-2 draw in the away game against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim . In the end, Leipzig was surprisingly runner-up in its first Bundesliga season. In the DFB-Pokal 2018/19 he reached the cup final with his team for the first time. They lost in Berlin against Bayern Munich 3-0.

His contract in Leipzig runs until 2023.

National team career

Péter Gulácsi gained his first experience in the youth national teams of his home country in 2007, when he was used for the first time in an international match of the Hungarian U17 team ; another three international appearances followed in the same year. In 2008 he took part with the U19 national team of Hungary in the qualification for the U19 European Championship 2008 in the Czech Republic and qualified with the team for the final round. There the team around regular goalkeeper Gulácsi fought their way to the semi-finals, where they lost 1-0 to Italy after a Forestieri goal. In total, the England legionnaire made 15 international appearances for the U19 national team in his home country in 2008. In addition, he was brought to the senior national team of Hungary for the first time in May 2008 , although he was not used in the friendly international match against Croatia .

During the same year, the goalkeeper was also appointed to the Hungarian U20 , where he made his international debut and qualified with the team for the U-20 World Cup in Egypt in 2009 through the U-19 European Championship last year . There Gulácsi became Hungary's hero of this world championship after he kept his team in the current tournament , among other things through his performance in the penalty shootout in the round of 16 against his colleagues from the Czech Republic . While the Hungarians were able to prevail against Italy in the further course of the tournament, the Hungarian U20 national team lost 3-2 in the semifinals against Ghana. In the subsequent game for third place between Hungary and Costa Rica, Hungary secured third place. When it was 1-1 after regular playing time, the match was decided on penalties, where Gulácsi parried three penalties scored by Costa Rica and thus became one of the main responsible for the victory and third place in the World Cup. Between 2008 and 2009 Gulácsi completed twelve international matches for Hungary's U-20s.

At the same time he came from 2009 for the Hungarian U21 national team, in which he was the goalkeeper and played 26 official games.

On June 4, 2012 he was called up by Sándor Egervári for the friendly international match against Ireland for the first time in the Hungarian national soccer team .

At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included in the Hungarian squad. As one of two substitute goalkeepers, he was not used in the tournament.
