Yussuf Yurary Poulsen (born June 15, 1994 in Copenhagen ) is a Danish football player . The striker is under contract with RB Leipzig and plays for the Danish national team .

origin

Poulsen is the son of a Tanzanian father and a Danish mother. His father Yurary, who died of cancer in 1999 , had worked on a container ship that commuted between Africa and Denmark and stayed in Copenhagen.

Beginnings in Denmark

Poulsen began playing football at BK Skjold as a defender and played together with Kenneth Zohoré in a team. After he had switched to the offspring of FC Copenhagen , the coach Poulsen used in the storm. At the age of 14 he moved from BK Skjold to the youth of Lyngby BK . As part of the youth team of Lyngby BK, he made his professional debut on December 4, 2011; On the 18th day of the Superliga in the game against AC Horsens he was substituted on in the 84th minute for Mathias Tauber . At the end of the season he had come to five missions. With Lyngby BK he was relegated from the super league. On August 5, 2012 he played in the 1-0 win on the second match day against AB Gladsaxe for the first time in the second division; he was substituted on in the 61st minute and scored the winning goal in the 80th minute. In this season he came to 29 point games and eleven goals. The rise was missed as fourth in the table. On May 20, 2013 he played in the 2: 4 defeat on the 33rd and final game day, again against AB Gladsaxe, last time for Lyngby BK.

Change to RB Leipzig

Poulsen turned down requests from top division clubs and signed a four-year contract with RB Leipzig on July 4, 2013 . In his first season he played 36 of the 38 league games, scored ten goals and was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga with RB at the end of the season . On the 2nd match day of the 2014/15 season , Poulsen scored the club's first second division goal. As a result, the Dane was a regular player and was finally promoted to the Bundesliga with RB in spring 2016 . The first year in the German top flight ended Leipzig same as runners, Poulsen was able to contribute nine points scorer. The following European Cup season was the first for players and clubs alike, after the group phase of the Champions League they did not survive , they made it to the quarter-finals of the Europa League . In the end, Poulsen had 15 scorer points in 41 competitive games.

A DFB Cup final was played for the first time in spring 2019 , but it was lost to FC Bayern Munich . Poulsen's contract had already been extended to June 2022 in advance. At 5-0 in Mainz on matchday 27 of the 2019/20 Bundesliga season , in which he also scored once, the Dane completed his 250th competitive game for RB Leipzig, of which he is also the record player. With the team, Poulsen was again third in the table and for the first time in the club's history reached the eighth, quarter and semi-finals of the Champions League .

National team

Poulsen played for the Danish U16 national team . He took part in the 2011 European Championships in Serbia with the U17s . Poulsen played at this tournament in four games and reached the semi-finals with his team, in which the Danish team were eliminated by Germany . By participating in the semi-finals, the Danish U17 qualified for the U17 World Cup 2011 in Mexico , where the Danish U17 national team was eliminated after the group stage; Poulsen was used in all three group games. In May and June 2015 he was nominated by senior national coach Morten Olsen for the friendly against Montenegro and by U21 coach Jess Thorup for the squad for the European Championship finals. At the U21 European Championship, he and the team qualified for the semi-finals and participation in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro . In qualifying for the 2016 European Championship finals for the senior national teams, Poulsen made six appearances. In Danish club football, Poulsen did not wear a jersey with his last name, but with his middle name “Yurary” in memory of his father of the same name, who died of cancer in 1999. Also in the Danish national team he wears the name Yurary on his back. In the Danish capital, he and two friends have been running Café Social since February 2016 .

In September 2019, he and his fiancée became parents of a son.

In addition to his mother tongue , the Dane is also fluent in German .
