Beginnings in Hanover
Marcel Halstenberg began his career at Germania Grasdorf before he was poached by Hannover 96 in 1999 . There he went through all youth teams and played in the U-17 and U-19 Bundesliga , among others .
For the 2010/11 season he moved up to the second team of Hannover 96, made his debut in the Regionalliga Nord on November 22, 2010 in a 1-1 draw against Holstein Kiel on the starting line-up and was replaced in the 78th minute. He finished the season with Hanover in ninth place in the table and played 19 league games. In a test match between the reserve and the professionals, which the Bundesliga team only just won 3-2, he made a good impression and then received an invitation for a test training session with the professionals.
Time in Dortmund
Although there were financially more lucrative offers, Halstenberg opted for what he saw as the best sporting alternative and switched to Borussia Dortmund II on a free transfer in July 2011 . He made his league debut for BVB on August 6 in a 2-0 away win at 1. FC Kaiserslautern II . On December 3, he saw a yellow-red card in the 1-0 defeat against Rot-Weiss Essen shortly before the end of the game. In the second half of the season Halstenberg brought more scoring danger into the Dortmund game. On March 28, 2012, he scored his first goal for BVB in a 4-2 win over Eintracht Trier . Furthermore, he scored one goal each against TuS Koblenz and SC Verl on the 33rd and 34th matchdays . After the second team was 14 points behind Sportfreunde Lotte at the end of the first half of the season and was thus the only promotion place, they achieved 52 out of a maximum of 57 possible points in the second half and rose one point ahead of Lotte in the 3rd soccer league in 2012 / 13 on.
In preparation for the 2012/13 season, he trained with the BVB professionals due to the lack of EM participants. On July 21, 2012 he made his debut in the third division in the 2-0 defeat at VfL Osnabrück . On May 18, 2013, he and his team achieved a 1-0 away win at VfB Stuttgart II , which ensured the U-23s to stay in the 3rd division on the 38th and final day of the match.
FC St. Pauli
In March 2013, the second division FC St. Pauli announced the commitment of Halstenberg for the 2013/14 season . He signed a three-year contract until the end of June 2016.
RB Leipzig
After the fifth match day of the 2015/16 season, he moved to league rivals RB Leipzig , where he signed a four-year contract. He made his Bundesliga debut on August 28, 2016 (1st matchday) in a 2-2 draw in the away game against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim . He scored his first Bundesliga goal on December 12, 2017 in a 1-1 draw against VfL Wolfsburg .
National team
On November 3, 2017, he was nominated for the first time for the senior national team by national coach Joachim Löw and made his international debut on November 10 in a friendly against the national team of England .
