Dayotchanculle "Dayot" Oswald Upamecano (born October 27, 1998 in Évreux ) is a French football player with Guinea-Bissau roots. The defender is under contract with RB Leipzig in Germany and is a young French national player.
Club career
Upamecano played in France in the youth of Valenciennes FC . As U17 European champion in 2015 with the French selection , he attracted the attention of scouts from Arsenal , Manchester City , Juventus Turins , Olympique Marseilles , Bayern Munich and other European clubs. In the end, however, after positive discussions with the then sporting director Ralf Rangnick, he decided to sign a three-year contract with the Austrian champions and cup winners FC Red Bull Salzburg , where he also became a cooperation player for the farm team FC Liefering . Before him, later national players such as Jean-Pierre Papin or Didier Six had passed through the Valenciennes youth department.
At the beginning of the 2015/16 season , Upamecano played exclusively for the second division Liefering and with the A-youth team of FC Red Bull Salzburg in the UEFA Youth League . He made his debut in the second division in July 2015, when he was in the starting line-up against SKN St. Pölten on the second day of that season and was replaced by Luan in the 29th minute . In March 2016, the Frenchman finally made his Bundesliga debut when he played through against SV Mattersburg on matchday 28 . In the 2016/17 season , the defender was finally able to earn a regular place with the "Bulls" and from then on he was no longer used for Liefering. The defender was also able to gain his first international experience in the Europa League , but did not get beyond the group stage with Salzburg.
In the winter break of 2016/17 Upamecano moved to the German Bundesliga club and partner club RB Leipzig , with whom he received a contract valid until June 2021. He played his first Bundesliga game away against Borussia Dortmund on February 4, 2017 and was called up in central defense until the end of the season, when he was runner-up with RB. Head coach Hasenhüttl had to take the 18-year-old off the field more often than not because he was in danger of yellow and red several times. In his second season, Upamecano developed alongside his partner Willi Orban to become a regular in the defensive network and was regularly used in both the European Cup, the DFB Cup and the Bundesliga when he was fit. In 2018, Upamecano was one of the 20 finalists of the Golden Boy Award , which the Italian sports newspaper Tuttosport awards every year to the best U21 player in the world. The Frenchman dropped out between January and May 2019 due to a serious knee injury, but was able to participate in the cup final , which was lost to champions Bayern Munich. The 2019/20 season , which was interrupted for several weeks by the COVID-19 pandemic , ended the defender with Leipzig again as third in the table, his contract was then extended to June 2023. In the Champions League, which continued after the European league competitions at the beginning of August 2020, he and the team reached the eighth, quarter and finally even the semi-finals for the first time.
National team
Upamecano, whose roots are in Guinea-Bissau , has played in all of France's youth national teams since he was 16 . With the U17 he was European champion in 2015 and also elected to the team of the tournament .
Upamecano is currently running for France's U21s under coach Sylvain Ripoll.
