Ethan Kwame Colm Raymond Ampadu (born September 14, 2000 in Exeter , England ) is a Welsh football player in the position of central defender and defensive midfielder . He is under contract with Chelsea .

Club career

Started his career at Exeter City

Ethan Ampadu was born in Exeter on September 14, 2000, the son of professional footballer Kwame Ampadu and a Welsh woman . His father had moved to Exeter City from Leyton Orient only a few months earlier, taking his family with him. He started playing soccer in his earliest childhood and was active in selection teams and appeared for youth teams from Stoke Hill during his time at the Ladysmith Federation schools in Exeter . In 2008 he joined Exeter City, where his father was also involved in the youth development.

In the 2016/17 season - at that time still 15 years old - Ampadu was appointed to the professional squad for the first time. For the team from the fourth-rate Football League Two , he was used for the first time in a professional game by long-time Exeter coach Paul Tisdale at the first round match in the EFL Cup 2016/17 . The game against Brentford FC was decided in extra time in favor of Exeter City; Ampadu was in action for the entire 120 minutes and was even named player of the evening. When he performed on August 9, 2016, he was 15 years, ten months and 26 days old, breaking Cliff Bastin's age record that has been in place for 88 years . A week later, he made his league debut in the EFL League Two 2016/17 in a 1-0 home defeat against Crawley Town as a central defender , and by the end of the season he had eight league appearances, six of them in the starting line-up.

Switch to Chelsea

Ampadu at Chelsea (2017)

Ampadu have been courted by all of England's top clubs and on July 1, 2017, they signed a contract with the Premier League club, Chelsea, dated until summer 2020 . Despite the repeatedly emphasized good relationship between the two clubs, there was a disparity and disputes about the transfer, which resulted in legal action. In April 2018, Chelsea was ordered to pay £ 2.5million in training compensation. Furthermore, Exeter City will receive a 20 percent share of any transfer fee should Ampadu ever leave the Blues .

At the club from west London , Ampadu was primarily used in the club 's own academy and was part of the successful squad of Chelsea FC, which took part in the 2017/18 UEFA Youth League . As a regular he took part in five of the six group games of his team and rose with the team as the clear winner of group C in the subsequent round of 16. In this, the young central defender scored a goal in a 5-2 win over the youth of Feyenoord Rotterdam and was also used in the subsequent quarter-final match against Real Madrid . In this he had to be replaced in the 80th minute due to injury; a week later it was discovered that Ampadu had broken his ankle and was out for the remainder of the season. After the loss of Ampadus, the team reached the final against the offspring of FC Barcelona , in which they lost 3-0.

The young defensive player also made several appearances this season for the club's U23 team in the Professional U23 Development League and in the Football League Trophy 2017/18 , in which he was eliminated on penalties in the semi-finals against Lincoln City . Ampadu made his breakthrough in the professional team six days after his 17th birthday when he came on the pitch in the third round of the EFL Cup 2017/18 against Nottingham Forest in the 56th minute of play for Cesc Fàbregas . With his commitment, he was the first Chelsea FC player born in the 2000s to make his competitive debut on the professional team. He made his Ampadu debut on December 12 in a 3-1 away win over Huddersfield Town in the Premier League , when Conte sent him into central defense from the 80th minute as a replacement for Andreas Christensen . In January and February he played several games in the FA Cup 2017/18 , which Chelsea FC subsequently won. He also won the FA Youth Cup of the 2017/18 season with the academy team .

RB Leipzig

For the 2019/20 season, Ampadu switched to RB Leipzig on loan for one year in the Bundesliga . In central defense, the Welshman was used as a supplementary player three times each in the league and in the Champions League , where the quarter-finals have not yet been played, and once in the DFB Cup . After a back injury sustained in March 2020, he was out on a long-term basis. Ampadu left the club with his contract at the end of the season.

National team career

From the beginning to the U17

Ampadu would have been eligible to play for Ghana and Ireland for the Welsh and English associations due to his father's descent. Ampadu gained his first experience in a youth national team with the youth teams of the Welsh Football Association when he appeared in the U14 , U15 and U16 age groups . As team captain , he led the Welsh U-16s to a historic victory in the final of the youth football tournament Victory Shield in the 2014/15 season. It was Wales' first win in 66 years. Because of his achievements, The Football Association also tried to guide the young Welsh international to an English junior national team. She also succeeded when she brought 14-year-old Ampadu, who had previously participated in training camps for various English age groups, to the U-16 national team in the summer of 2015 . Under Dan Micciche , the then Exeter City player took part in two friendly international matches against the United States in August as part of a 20-man squad . Towards the end of September 2015, Micciche nominated him for the 18-man squad that took part in the Montaigu tournament .

While he was playing in friendly matches for the English U-16 team, Geraint Williams nominated him in mid-August 2015 for the U-17 national team of Wales . In the two friendlies against the old colleagues from Greece , which served as preparation for the first qualifying phase for the U-17 European Championship 2016 , Ampadu played in the 1-0 defeat in the first leg and was also part of the starting eleven in the second leg. In the end of October, the first European Championship qualifying round, which was played in three group games in the Welsh port city of Newport , Ampadu was not part of the regular squad. However, this changed from the subsequent European Championship qualifying round, when in March 2016 all three group games of the elite round were used as a defensive midfield in the starting line-up. The elite round finished the Welsh in third place, which means that the team could not qualify for the European Championship finals in Azerbaijan in May 2016 . In the spring, Ampadu was allowed to train for the first time with the Welsh national team , which was just preparing for the 2016 European Championship . After taking part in the preparation for it in August 2016, Ampadu joined the U-17 squad in qualifying for the 2017 U-17 European Championship . In the three group matches of the first qualifying round, the defensive player, who had just turned 16, sometimes even appeared as the team captain, and as third in the group he missed the next elite round.

First appearances in the U-19 and A national team debut

In the autumn of the same year, Ampadu received his first call-up to the Welsh U-19 squad and appeared as a center-back almost two weeks later in Wales' three games in qualifying for the 2017 European Under-19 Championship . Despite a strong performance and victories over their colleagues from England and Luxembourg , Wales suffered a 2-0 defeat against Greece in their first game and ended up in third place in the group, tied with first place (Greece) and second place (England). Since only the best third-placed of the three groups moved into the subsequent elite round of qualification, Wales had to admit defeat to Belarus in this ranking as second-placed . A few days before the start of the qualification, Ampadu received the FAW Award in the category “Men's Young Player of the Year” from the Welsh Football Association .

In May 2017, national coach Chris Coleman brought him back to the senior team for a training camp. After that, it should take almost six months before a possible use of Ampadus in the Welsh national team became more concrete. On November 1, 2017, Coleman nominated the now 17-year-old for two friendlies against France and Panama , whereupon the young defender went onto the field on November 10 in a 2-0 defeat against France in the 63rd minute of play for Joe Ledley made his debut in the senior national team. In the 1-1 draw against Panama four days later, Ampadu played in defensive midfield from the start and was replaced by Andrew Crofts in the 67th minute .
