Club career

Joe Ledley was born in Cardiff and raised in the Fairwater neighborhood, and as a teenager he attended Cantonian High School in Cardiff . Ledley began playing football in his hometown, near Cardiff City, at the age of 9 . With the Bluebirds ( Rotkehl-Hüttensänger ) he went through the entire youth department before he could celebrate his professional debut in the League Cup against Brighton & Hove Albion in 2004 . The midfielder made his league debut in October 2004 against Rotherham United , and in November of the same he was able to score the first professional goal in a 4-1 win against West Ham United . With Cardiff, Ledley reached the final in the 2007/08 FA Cup at London's Wembley Stadium which, however, was lost 0-1 to Portsmouth FC . In the Football League Championship 2009/10 Ledley failed with City in the playoffs at Blackpool FC on penalties.

On July 12, 2010, Ledley signed a four-year contract with Celtic Glasgow . In the 2011/12 season Ledley met in the Old Firm Derby against Glasgow Rangers to 1-0, which was also the final score. With the win he helped Celtic to take the lead in the standings. That season he was then champion with Celtic and took part in the UEFA Champions League 2012/13 , where the team survived the group stage but failed in the round of 16 at Juventus Turin with two defeats. The championship could be defended in the following season, but in the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League Celtic failed in the group stage and only finished fourth behind FC Barcelona , AC Milan and Ajax Amsterdam . Celtic could only win the home game against Ajax Amsterdam.

At the end of January 2014 he moved to the English first division club Crystal Palace with whom he finished 10th and 15th in the 2014/15 and 2015/16 Premier League seasons .

National team

Joe Ledley has played for Wales since the U-17. He was first invited to the A-Eleven in his home country in September 2005. In the qualifying game for the 2006 World Cup against England in third place, he initially only sat on the bench, then made his debut four days later in the 0-1 defeat in the away qualifier against Poland when he came on in the 82nd minute. It was his only use in the World Cup qualification, which the Welsh finished fifth in the group. It was only six months later that he made his second appearance in the Welsh's first international match against Paraguay , this time in the 70th minute of the game. In his third international match on May 27, 2006, the Welsh's first game against Trinidad & Tobago , he then played over 90 minutes for the first time. In the remaining six games in 2006, including three in qualifying for the Euro 2008 , he was only substituted on again. In the first three games in 2007, he was used only once in the first half against Ireland . In the next 16 games he was only missing twice and scored his first goal for the Dragons against San Marino in the European Championship qualifier to 2-0 in the meantime, in the end it was 2-1. But then the Welsh had no chance to qualify for the EM. Things did not go any better for Wales in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup . They could make it difficult for some opponents and Ledley scored the interim 1-1 in the second game in Moscow in a 2-1 draw against Russia , but in the end only came fourth in the group. In mid-2009, he was allowed to wear the captain's armband in three games for regular captain Craig Bellamy .

On August 11, 2010 he was successful as a penalty taker for Wales for the first time and scored the interim 2-1 in the 5-1 win against Luxembourg . In the subsequent qualification for the EM 2012 he came to five missions, four of them over 90 minutes. The Welsh started the qualification with four defeats and thus had no opportunity to qualify early on, but were able to win three more games in the second half of the qualification. In the qualifying for the 2014 World Cup under new coach Chris Coleman , the first and last two games took place without him.

It went better in qualifying for the EM 2016 . The Welsh only lost the penultimate game against Bosnia and Herzegovina , but since Israel lost to Cyprus on the same day , they qualified for a European Championship finals for the first time that day. Ledley had been used in seven games, but had only played four times the full 90 minutes.

For the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was accepted into the Wales squad despite a broken fibula towards the end of the season . In the first game against Slovakia he came on after the opponent equalized 1-1. The game was won 2-1. In the second game against neighboring England he was in the starting line-up, but was replaced after the English equalized. His teammates then lost 2-1 in stoppage time. In the other four tournament games up to and including the semi-finals, he was on the starting line-up and was replaced each time. The team then dropped out against Portugal.
