James Allison "Jimmy" Hayes (born December 21, 1946 in Lafayette , Louisiana ) is an American politician . Between 1987 and 1997 he represented the state of Louisiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jimmy Hayes attended the public schools of his home country and then studied until 1967 at the University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette. After studying law at Tulane University in New Orleans and being admitted to the bar in 1970, he began working in his new profession in New Orleans. Between 1968 and 1974, Hayes was also a member of the Louisiana National Guard Air Force . In addition to his legal work, Hayes was also involved in the real estate industry. He was also an assistant district attorney for some time. Between 1984 and 1985, he worked for the Louisiana State Government as the Commissioner for Financial Institutions .

Hayes was originally a member of the Democratic Party . In the 1986 congressional election , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the seventh constituency of Louisiana , where he succeeded John Breaux on January 3, 1987 . After four re-elections, he was able to complete five legislative terms in Congress by January 2, 1997 . Hayes was considered a conservative democrat. On December 1, 1995, he joined the Republicans because his former party was no longer conservative enough for him.

In 1996 he ran unsuccessfully for his new party's nomination for the US Senate elections . To this day he is active as a lobbyist in the political arena. In 2008 he supported US Senator David Vitter's election campaign .
