Charles Francis Buck (born November 5, 1841 in Dürrheim , Baden , †  January 19, 1918 in New Orleans , Louisiana ) was an American politician of German origin. Between 1895 and 1897 he represented the state of Louisiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Charles Buck was born in 1841 in what is now Bad Dürrheim, which at that time belonged to the Grand Duchy of Baden . In 1852 he emigrated to the United States with his parents. The family settled in New Orleans, Louisiana. Buck attended high school there until 1861 . He then studied at Louisiana State Seminary and the affiliated military academy. Today's Louisiana State University emerged from this institution . After completing a law degree and being admitted to the bar in 1867, he began to work in his new profession in New Orleans.

Buck served on the New Orleans City School Board for many years. Between 1880 and 1884 he also acted as the city's legal representative. Politically, Buck joined the Democratic Party . In the congressional elections of 1894 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the second constituency of Louisiana , where he succeeded the no longer candidate Robert C. Davey on March 4, 1895 . Since Buck refused to run again in 1896, he was only able to complete one term in Congress until March 3, 1897 . Then his mandate fell back to Robert Davey, who had decided to make a political comeback.

After serving in the US House of Representatives, Buck returned to work as a lawyer. In 1896 and 1904, he ran unsuccessfully for the office of mayor of New Orleans. From 1898 to 1900 he was a member of the Louisiana Supreme Court committee that decided applications for admission to the state bar. Charles Buck died on January 19, 1918 in New Orleans and was buried there.
