James Z. Spearing

James Zacharie Spearing (born April 23, 1864 in Alto , Cherokee County , Texas , †  November 2, 1942 in New Orleans , Louisiana ) was an American politician . Between 1924 and 1931 he represented the state of Louisiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

As a toddler, James Spearing came to New Orleans with his parents in 1866. There he attended the public schools until 1877. After studying law at Tulane University and being admitted to the bar in 1886, he began working in his new profession in New Orleans. There he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

Between 1908 and 1912 and again between 1916 and 1920 he was a member of the school board in the New Orleans district. In between he was a member of the Louisiana State School Commission from 1912 to 1916. After the death of MP H. Garland Dupré , Spearing was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC when the by-election for Louisiana’s second mandate was due . There he took his seat on April 22, 1924. After he was confirmed in the following three elections, he could remain in Congress until March 3, 1931 .

Prior to the 1930 elections, Spearing was no longer nominated for another term by his party. In the following years up to his death on November 2, 1942, he practiced again as a lawyer in New Orleans.
