Theodore Stark Wilkinson (politician)

Theodore Stark Wilkinson (born December 18, 1847 in Plaquemines Parish , Louisiana , †  February 1, 1921 in New Orleans , Louisiana) was an American politician . Between 1887 and 1891 he represented the state of Louisiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Theodore Wilkinson was born on the Point Celeste Plantation in Louisiana. He received a private education, but also attended the public schools in his home country. He then studied until 1870 at Washington and Lee University in Lexington ( Virginia ). After returning to Louisiana, he started growing sugar. He also became a member of the school board of Plaquemines Parish. Wilkinson was also a member and chairman of the Third Dyke District in Louisiana.

Politically, Wilkinson became a member of the Democratic Party . In the congressional elections of 1886 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of Louisiana , where he succeeded Louis St. Martin on March 4, 1887 . After a re-election in 1888, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1891 . For the elections of 1890 Wilkinson declined to run again.

In 1892, Wilkinson chaired a meeting that opposed a state lottery. From 1893 to 1898 he was in charge of customs in the port of New Orleans. In 1898 he ran unsuccessfully for governor of Louisiana. In 1912 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Baltimore , where Woodrow Wilson was nominated as his party's presidential candidate. Otherwise Wilkinson worked again as a sugar grower. He died in New Orleans on February 1, 1921.
