William Morgan "Bill" Cassidy (born September 28, 1957 in Highland Park , Illinois ) is an American politician . He has represented the state of Louisiana in the US Senate since 2015 . He had previously been a member of the United States House of Representatives since 2009 .

Career

Bill Cassidy studied medicine at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge until 1983 and then worked as a doctor, specializing in liver diseases. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 2006 and 2008 he was a member of the Louisiana Senate .

In the 2008 congressional election , Cassidy was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the sixth constituency of Louisiana , where he succeeded the defeated Democrat Don Cazayoux on January 3, 2009 . After two re-elections, his term of office lasted until January 3, 2015. In Congress , he was a member of the Agriculture Committee , the Education and Labor Committee and the Committee on Natural Resources. He was also a member of several sub-committees.

In November 2014, Cassidy ran in the Senate election against the Democratic incumbent Mary Landrieu . With just under 41 percent, he came second behind Landrieu (42 percent). According to the Louisiana Constitution, a runoff election was necessary because none of the applicants had an absolute majority. Cassidy prevailed with 56:44 percent of the vote and was able to replace Landrieu in the Senate on January 3, 2015.

Bill Cassidy is married to doctor Laura Layden. The couple have three children and live privately in Baton Rouge.
