Charles E. Nash

Charles Edmund Nash (born May 23, 1844 in Opelousas , Louisiana , †  June 21, 1913 in New Orleans , Louisiana) was an American politician . Between 1875 and 1877 he represented the state of Louisiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Charles Nash attended the public schools in his home country and then learned the trade of bricklayer. During the Civil War , he joined the Union Army in 1863, which was then already occupying parts of Louisiana. In the army he rose to the rank of sergeant major. In 1865 he was employed by the customs authorities.

Politically, Nash was a member of the Republican Party . In the congressional elections of 1874 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of Louisiana , where he succeeded George A. Sheridan on March 4, 1875 . Since he was defeated by the Democrat Edward White Robertson in the next election in 1876 , he was only able to complete one term in Congress until March 3, 1877 . It would be almost 100 years before a Republican, Henson Moore, was elected to Congress for this district in 1974. Meanwhile, the sixth district was represented exclusively by members of the Democratic Party in the US House of Representatives.

After leaving Congress, Charles Nash did not hold any important political offices. He was only a post office owner in the city of Washington between February and May 1882 and died on June 21, 1913 in New Orleans.
