Newt Virgus Mills (born September 27, 1899 in Calhoun , Ouachita Parish , Louisiana , †  May 15, 1996 in Monroe , Louisiana) was an American politician . Between 1937 and 1943 he represented the state of Louisiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Newt Mills attended the public schools in his home country and then the Louisiana Polytechnic Institute in Ruston . He then continued his education at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge , Louisiana State Normal College in Natchitoches and Spencer Business College in New Orleans . He also studied law. Between 1921 and 1932 Mills was a teacher at Mer Rouge ; from 1933 to 1936 he was a budget auditor ( Supervisor of Public Accounts ) for the state of Louisiana. At the same time, Mills was involved in various other industries such as livestock, real estate, and the oil industry. In 1936 he served on the staff of the Governor of Louisiana.

Politically, Mills was a member of the Democratic Party . In the 1936 congressional elections he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Louisiana , where he succeeded Riley J. Wilson on January 3, 1937 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1943 . There, further New Deal laws were passed by the federal government under President Franklin D. Roosevelt . From December 1941 the work of the Congress was also determined by the events of World War II .

In 1942, Newt Mills was no longer nominated by his party for another term in the US House of Representatives. In the following years he worked in the oil and gas industry. He also dealt with the cultivation of cotton and the procurement of materials for the construction industry. He lived in Monroe until his death in 1996.
