William Dunbar (politician)

William Dunbar (* 1805 in Virginia ; †  March 18, 1861 in St. Bernard Parish , Louisiana ) was an American politician . Between 1853 and 1855 he represented the state of Louisiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Both the exact date and place of birth of William Dunbar are unknown. What is certain is that he was born in 1805 in the state of Virginia, where he also received his education. He later moved to Alexandria . After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began working in his new profession in the early 1830s.

In 1852, Dunbar moved to Louisiana. There he became an associate judge at the Supreme Court of that state on September 1, 1852 . He held this office until 1853. Politically, Dunbar was a member of the Democratic Party . In the congressional election of 1852 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of Louisiana , where he succeeded Louis St. Martin on March 4, 1853 . In Congress , Dunbar completed only one legislative period until March 3, 1855, which was determined by the events and discussions leading up to the civil war .

After leaving the US House of Representatives, Dunbar retired to his now acquired sugar plantation in St. Bernard Parish. He died there on March 18, 1861.
