Emile La Sére

Emile La Sére (* 1802 in Santo Domingo , †  August 14, 1882 in New Orleans , Louisiana ) was an American politician . Between 1846 and 1851 he represented the state of Louisiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Around 1805 Emile La Sére came with his parents to New Orleans in what was then Orleans territory . There he attended public schools. He then worked in trade in Jackson and later for a few years in Mexico . In 1840, he served as the New Orleans District Sheriff for several years .

La Sére joined the Democratic Party . After the resignation of MP John Slidell , he was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC when the by-election was due for the first Louisiana MP . There he took up his new mandate on January 29, 1846. After he was confirmed in the two subsequent regular elections, he could remain in Congress until March 3, 1851 . The beginning of his time there was overshadowed by the events of the Mexican-American War . Between 1846 and 1847, Emile La Sére was chairman of the Post Office's Expenditure Control Committee.

During the Civil War , La Sére Major served in the Confederate Army . After the war, he was Democratic Party leader in Louisiana for more than 15 years. He also became President of the Tehuantepec Railroad Co. in Mexico. Emile La Sére died on August 14, 1882 in New Orleans.
