Wilbert Joseph "Billy" Tauzin (born June 14, 1943 in Chackbay , Lafourche Parish , Louisiana ) is an American politician . Between 1980 and 2005 he represented the state of Louisiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Billy Tauzin attended Nicholls State University in Thibodaux until 1964 . After studying law at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge , he was admitted to the bar in 1967. Politically, Tauzin became a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1963 and 1967 he was employed in the administration of the State Senate . From 1972 to 1980 he was a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives .

Following the resignation of Representative David C. Treen , who had been elected Governor of Louisiana, Tauzin was elected as its successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC at the by-election for the third seat of Louisiana . There he took up his new mandate on May 22, 1980. After eight re-elections, he could remain in Congress until January 3, 2005 . Tauzin was considered one of the most conservative democratic MPs. In 1995 his party seemed too liberal to him; therefore he switched to the Republican Party , as their candidate in the following elections up to and including 2002 in the US House of Representatives. Between 2001 and 2004 he was Chairman of the Energy and Trade Committee. In 2004, Tauzin decided not to run again for health reasons.

After serving in the US House of Representatives, Billy Tauzin became president and chairman of the board of a pharmaceutical lobby company. He is married for the second time; from his first marriage he has five grown children.
