James Domengeaux

James R. Domengeaux (born January 6, 1907 in Lafayette , Louisiana , † April 11, 1988 ibid) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ).

Life

Domengeaux was a respected lawyer. Between January 1941 and April 1944 he represented the state of Louisiana for the first time in the US House of Representatives ; previously he was a member of parliament in that state. He resigned his seat in Congress to join the US Army , but was retired that same year for health reasons and returned to politics. From November 1944 to January 1949 he sat again in the House of Representatives before he ran unsuccessfully for the US Senate .

In 1968 he founded the Council for the Development of French in Louisiana (CODOFIL). The revival of the French language in Louisiana remained his foremost concern until his death.
