Charles Magill Conrad

Charles Magill Conrad (born December 24, 1804 in Winchester, Virginia , † February 11, 1878 in New Orleans , Louisiana ) was an American politician who belonged to the cabinet of US President Millard Fillmore as Secretary of War . He also represented the state of Louisiana in both houses of Congress .

Life

Born in Virginia, he moved his family to Mississippi as a boy and later to Louisiana. Conrad was a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives from 1840 and was appointed to the US Senate in April 1842 as the successor to the resigned Alexander Mouton . After the end of the legislative period in March 1843, however, he lost his mandate when he was re-elected. He later served in the US House of Representatives between 1849 and 1850 . He resigned his mandate to become Secretary of War in the Fillmore Cabinet . His term of office ran from August 15, 1850 to March 7, 1853.

In the Confederate States , he served as a deputy in the Provisional Confederate Congress and as a deputy from Louisiana in the Confederate Congress between 1862 and 1864. After the war, he opened a law firm.
