Elaine S. Edwards

Elaine Schwartzenburg Edwards (born March 8, 1929 in Marksville , Avoyelles Parish , Louisiana , † May 14, 2018 in Denham Springs , Louisiana) was an American politician who briefly represented the state of Louisiana in the US Senate . There she belonged to the faction of the Democratic Party .

Life

When Senator Allen J. Ellender died on July 27, 1972, she was nominated by Louisiana's Governor Edwin Edwards , to whom she was married between 1949 and 1989, to fill the vacant Senate seat, and was thus from August 1 through member of Congress on November 13, 1972 . She did not run for the elections to fill the vacant Senate seat; she was succeeded by Bennett Johnston .
