Edward James Gay III (born May 5, 1878 in Iberville Parish , Louisiana , †  December 1, 1952 in New Orleans , Louisiana) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) who represented the state of Louisiana in the Senate .

Edward Gay was born on the Union Plantation in Iberville Parish in southern Louisiana. His grandfather, also known as Edward James Gay , was also a politician and sat in the United States House of Representatives from 1885 until his death in 1889 . Gay received his education at the Pantops Academy in Charlottesville ( Virginia ) and the Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville ( New Jersey ), before studying at Princeton University began this but did not graduate. Then he worked in sugar production and was busy with the cultivation of various agricultural products.

Gay's political career began in 1904 when he entered the Louisiana House of Representatives , where he remained until 1918. On November 5, 1918 of that year, he won the by-election for the seat of the late Robert F. Broussard in the US Senate; after Broussard's death, Walter Guion initially exercised the mandate on a provisional basis. He was a member of Congress until March 3, 1921; he did not apply for re-election. During his time as Senator, he served as chairman of the Committee on Coast and Insular Survey . After leaving the Senate, Gay was no longer politically active. He acted as president of a manufacturing company and died in New Orleans in 1952.
