Allan B. Magruder

Allan Bowie Magruder (* 1775 in Colony of Virginia , †  April 16, 1822 in Opelousas , Louisiana ) was an American politician ( Democratic Republican Party ). He was one of the first two US Senators from the state of Louisiana.

Originally from Kentucky, Allan Magruder attended public schools in his home country, then completed an academic education and eventually studied law . He was inducted into the Bar in 1796 and began practicing law in Lexington . He later established himself as a lawyer in the Louisiana Territory . It was there that his political career began with membership in the territorial House of Representatives.

After Louisiana joined the United States, Magruder and Jean N. Destréhan were sent to Washington, DC as the first two US Senators from the new state . While Destréhan never officially took up his mandate, Magruders term began on September 3, 1812; it ended as early as March 3 of the following year , since he had taken the class 3 seat . Magruder did not run again and returned to Louisiana to work as a lawyer again. He died in Opelousas in April 1822.
