Solomon W. Downs

Solomon Weathersbee Downs (* 1801 in Montgomery County , Tennessee , †  August 14, 1854 in Crab Orchard Springs , Kentucky ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) who represented the state of Louisiana in the US Senate .

After finishing school, Downs attended Transylvania University in Lexington , where he graduated in 1823. He then studied law , was admitted to the bar in 1826 and began practicing in Bayou Sara, Louisiana. He later moved to Ouachita before moving to New Orleans in 1845 . There he worked as a lawyer and was also a successful planter .

From 1845 to 1847, Downs served as the federal attorney for the Louisiana Judicial District; During this time he also took part in the state's constitutional convention. Eventually he was elected for the Democrats in the US Senate in Washington, DC , where he spent a full term from March 4, 1847 to March 3, 1853. During this time he was among other things chairman of the Committee on Engrossed Bills . In 1853 he was then appointed tax collector in the port of New Orleans by US President Franklin Pierce ; the following year Solomon Downs died in Kentucky.
