Dwight Filley Davis (born July 5, 1879 in St. Louis , Missouri , † November 28, 1945 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician , tennis player and founder of the Davis Cup .
biography
Davis' father, Oliver Filley, was Mayor of St. Louis from 1858 to 1861 . His cousin Chauncey Ives Filley held the same office from 1863 to 1864.
He donated the Davis Cup as a student at Harvard ; a trophy made of silver. The Davis Cup is a team competition in tennis and has been held annually since 1900.
Davis won the Davis Cup with the American team in 1900 and 1902 . He won the US Open in doubles with Holcombe Ward from 1899 to 1901 . In 1901 he was also in the final of Wimbledon with Ward . In 1904 he took part in the Summer Olympics. In singles he was able to win a match, in doubles he was eliminated with his partner in the quarterfinals. 1956 was posthumously inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame .
Davis studied law at Washington University School of Law but never practiced as a lawyer. Instead, he became active in politics. After the end of his career as a tennis player, Davis went into politics as a Republican and was initially Deputy Secretary of War from 1923 to 1925 and then Minister of War in the cabinet of US President Calvin Coolidge from 1925 to 1929 . Then he replaced Henry L. Stimson and Eugene Allen Gilmore as Governor General of the Philippines on July 8, 1929 . He held this office until January 9, 1932. After his death in 1945, Davis was honored with a star on the St. Louis Walk of Fame .
