Holcombe Ward
Holcombe Ward (born November 23, 1878 in New York City , † January 23, 1967 in Red Bank , New Jersey ) was an American tennis player and 1904 winner of the US singles championships .
Life
Ward, a Harvard University student , was part of the American tennis team with Dwight Filley Davis and Malcolm Whitman at the first edition of the International Lawn Tennis Challenge (now the Davis Cup ) in 1900 in Boston . There defeated the Britons Ernest Black and Herbert Roper Barrett in doubles with Davis ; the US team finally won the match 3-0. In 1902 , 1905 and 1906 he was able to repeat this success with the USA team.
As a single player, his greatest success was winning the American men's singles championship in 1904. In doubles, he was successful there six times - in 1899, 1900, 1901, 1904, 1905 and 1906. In 1901 and 1905 he also entered the Wimbledon Championships and in 1901 reached the Challenge Round in doubles together with Davis , in which, however, both had to admit defeat to the brothers Laurence and Reginald Doherty . During his stay in London in 1905, Ward won the Queen's Club tournament before Wimbledon.
After 1906, Ward essentially ended his tennis career. In 1922 he won the US Seniors Championships with Davis over 45 years of age.
From 1937 to 1947 Ward was President of the American Tennis Association USTA . In 1956 he was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame . He died in 1967 at the age of 88.
