Frederick Beasley "Fred" Alexander (born August 14, 1880 in Sea Bright , New Jersey , † March 3, 1969 in Beverly Hills , California ) was an American tennis player .

Career

Alexander was born in New Jersey in 1880. In 1901 he won the Intercollegiate Championships in doubles as a student at Princeton University in 1900 and in singles a year later.

In 1908, his most successful year, he moved into the finals of the US Championships , but lost to Beals Wright . Together with Wright, he formed the US Davis Cup team, which won against the British Isles team in September . He then traveled to Melbourne with Wright , but the two lost the final at the end of November against the Australian team 3-2. After the Davis Cup, Alexander took the opportunity to take part in the Australian Championships , which were scheduled for mid-December this year. He won it promptly, as the first non-Australian ever; in the final he defeated Alfred Dunlop in five sets. With Dunlop he also won doubles against Anthony Wilding and Granville Sharp .

At the American championships, Alexander was successful in doubles several times. Together with Harold Hackett he moved there from 1905 on seven times without a break in the final and won it from 1907 to 1910. In 1917 he was able to win the double title for the fourth time, this time alongside Harold Throckmorton .

Alexander was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1961 . He died in Beverly Hills in 1969 at the age of 88.
