International Lawn Tennis Challenge 1900
The first edition of the International Lawn Tennis Challenge , today's Davis Cup , took place in 1900. The competition was initiated by Dwight Filley Davis and fellow students from Harvard University . Davis financed a 13- inch high and 18-inch diameter silver trophy for $ 750 from his own funds, and in February 1900 announced the first International Lawn Tennis Challenge , which was accepted by the British Isles . The two teams competed against each other in August 1900 in a mode proposed by Davis: on the first and third day two individual games were to be played, on the second day a double encounter should take place. The team that won at least three games won. The USA was able to assert itself against the British, who are regarded as the world's best tennis nation, and win the competition.
