International Lawn Tennis Challenge 1923

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Lawn Tennis Challenge 1923 was the 18th edition of the competition organized by the ITF for men's national tennis teams . For the first time, the challenger against the defending champion was not determined in a world group, but in two continental zones, the Europe and America zone . This became necessary on the one hand to cope with the increasing number of participants, and on the other hand to simplify logistics and reduce travel expenses.

The winners of the two zones played a playoff for the finals. Australia clearly prevailed against France 4-1. In the final, which took place from August 31 to September 3, defending champions USA also had the upper hand with a 4-1 win. The USA secured their eighth title so far and the fourth in a row.

Attendees

A total of 17 teams competed for a final ticket against the defending champion.

European zone

A total of 13 teams competed in the European zone. In addition to the European teams, Argentina and British India also played in this zone. For Ireland and Switzerland it was the first participation in the competition.

America Zone

In the American zone, which consists of four teams, not only the North American teams but also those from Australia and Japan competed . Hawaii played its first and last game in the Davis Cup that year.
