John Hawkes (tennis player)

John "Jack" Baily Hawkes (born June 7, 1899 in Geelong , † May 31, 1990 ) was an Australian tennis player .

Hawkes was the most successful Australian tennis player of the 1920s. In 1926 he won the Australian Tennis Championships . In the final, he defeated his compatriot James Willard in three sets (6: 1, 6: 3, 6: 1). A year later he lost the final against Gerald Patterson in five sets. In the doubles competition he won with his partner Gerald Patterson against James Anderson and Pat O'Hara Wood 6: 1, 6: 4, 6: 2 in 1926 and in 1927 against Pat O'Hara Wood and Ian McInnes 8: 6, 6: 2, 6: 1. In 1930 he reached the final with Tim Fitchett , but lost with him to last year's winners Jack Crawford and Harry Hopman . The mixed doubles of this competition he won with Esna Boyd Robertson in 1922, 1926 and 1927. In addition, the two were in the final in 1928, but gave up without a fight, so Daphne Akhurst Cozens and Jean Borotra won. He won the American tennis championships in 1925 with Kathleen McKane Godfree against Ermyntrude Harvey and Vincent Richards 6: 2, 6: 4 (after he failed with her 1923 final to Bill Tilden and Molla Mallory ) and in 1928 with Helen Wills against Edith Cross and Moody Edgar Moon 6: 1, 6: 3.
