Daphne Jessie Akhurst , later Daphne Cozens , (born April 22, 1903 in Sydney , † January 9, 1933 there ) was an Australian tennis player . In 1925 , 1926 , 1928 , 1929 and 1930 she won the women's singles five times at the Australian tennis championships, now known as the Australian Open . This puts her behind Margaret Smith with eleven individual wins and Nancye Wynne and Serena Williams , who have each won six times, fourth place in the tournament's all-time leaderboard. In 1931 she resigned from active tennis.

On February 26, 1930, she married Royston Stuckey Cozens in Sydney .

After her untimely death from an ectopic pregnancy at the age of only 29, the winners' trophy of the women's tournament at the Australian tennis championships was named the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup .
