history
Belgium has been taking part in the Davis Cup since 1904 and was able to reach the final when it first took part. However, the team of the United Kingdom had to admit defeat 5-0. The most successful player in history is Jacques Brichant , who played a total of 120 matches and won 71 of them.
The team attracted renewed attention in the seasons 1953 and 1957 , when Jacques Brichant and Philippe Washer almost single-handedly led the Belgians to victory in the European zone. The two beat Hungary , Great Britain , Italy and Denmark in 1953 . This was followed by the eliminations between the winners of the continental zones, in the first round of which Belgium beat the Indian team 5-0. In the final of the playoffs, Brichant and Washer faced the favored Americans , to whom they lost 4-1. In the 1957 season , Brichant and Washer repeated the success. In the opening game, they defeated Hungary again and it was the only game of the season in which Belgium used another player in Gino Mezzi. This was followed by victories against Mexico and Great Britain, as well as a victory against Italy in the final of the European zone. This time Belgium received a bye in the playoffs and met the Americans again in the subsequent final. Brichant and Washer each lost their first singles before they won doubles and Washer equalized the American leadership in his second singles. Despite a tight first set against Vic Seixas, Brichant had no chance in the end, he lost the game 8:10, 0: 6, 1: 6 and with it Belgium the game 2: 3.
In 2015 , Belgium reached the Davis Cup final for the first time in over 100 years. After a 3-2 opening win against Switzerland , a clear 5-0 win against Canada in the quarter-finals followed. The semi-final match against Argentina again won Belgium just 3-2. At home in Ghent, the team lost 3-1 to Great Britain in the final. In the decisive game Andy Murray prevailed against David Goffin in three sets. Also in 2017 Belgium moved to victories against Germany , Australia and Italy to the final. Against France the team lost 3-2, in the last game Steve Darcis lost in three sets against Lucas Pouille .
