Philippe Washer (born August 6, 1924 in Brussels , † November 27, 2015 in Knokke-Heist ) was a Belgian tennis player .

Life

Washer was able to reach the quarter-finals of the French championships in 1957 . In addition, between 1945 and 1957 he was Belgian champion nine times in singles and doubles, and twice in mixed.

In addition to numerous tournaments, Washer played numerous games for the Belgian Davis Cup team . Between 1949 and 1965 he played 40 games and played a total of 102 games. He won 46 of 64 singles games and 20. of 38 doubles games. He holds the record for most doubles games won in the Belgian Davis Cup history. Washer and his doubles partner Jacques Brichant received special attention in the 1953 and 1957 seasons as they led Belgium to victory in the European zone. The two beat Hungary , Great Britain , Italy and Denmark in 1953 . This was followed by the eliminations between the winners of the continental zones, in the first round of which Belgium beat the Indian team 5-0. In the final of the playoffs Washer and Brichant met the favored Americans , to whom they lost 4-1. Washer and Brichant repeated the success in the 1957 season. In the opening game Hungary were again the opponent and it was the only game of the season in which Belgium used another player in Gino Mezzi. This was followed by victories against Mexico, Great Britain and Italy. This time Belgium received a bye in the playoffs and met the Americans again in the final. Washer and Brichant lost their first singles before they won doubles and Washer equalized the American leadership in his second singles. Despite a tight first set against Vic Seixas, Brichant had no chance in the end, he lost the game 8:10, 0: 6, 1: 6 and with it Belgium the game 2: 3.

His father Jean Washer was also active and successful as a tennis player. Washer became Belgian national champion in squash in 1945 and 1954 .

Awards

In 1957 Washer and his twin partner Brichant received the Trophée national du Mérite sportif in Belgium , a national award for outstanding services in sport.
