Van Herck started playing tennis at the age of six. He reached the quarter-finals of the French Open junior tournament in 1992 . In 1993 he became a professional tennis player and initially played on the ATP Satellite Tour to gain his first world ranking points. In the same year he played his first match on the ATP World Tour . In 1994 he reached the final of the Challenger tournament in Ostend and was in the semi-finals of four other tournaments. In the following year he won three Challenger tournaments and was therefore listed in the top 100 of the tennis world rankings for the first time . During his career he was able to win eight tournaments on the Challenger Tour. His greatest successes on the ATP World Tour were semifinals in Palermo , Copenhagen and Delray Beach . He reached the highest ranking in the tennis world rankings in 1997 with position 65 in singles and position 291 in doubles.
His best individual result at a Grand Slam tournament was reaching the third round at the 1998 French Open, when he beat world number four Greg Rusedski in three sets in his first round game .
Van Herck played 10 singles and 2 doubles games for the Belgian Davis Cup team between 1995 and 1999 . His individual balance was 7: 3, with victories over Evgeni Kafelnikow , Thomas Enqvist and Cédric Pioline . He lost both of his doubles. He has been team captain of the Belgian team since 2012.
