Thomas Karl Johan Enqvist (born March 13, 1974 in Stockholm ) is a former Swedish tennis player .

Career

In his career he won 19 singles and one double title. His greatest successes were victories at the Masters Series tournaments in Paris (1996), Stuttgart (1999) and Cincinnati (2000). He reached his best world rankings in 1999 with position 4. In 1999 he reached the final of the Australian Open , which he lost against Yevgeny Kafelnikow 6: 4, 0: 6, 3: 6 and 6: 7. In 2001 he was in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon .

He won eleven of his 19 individual titles in indoor tournaments. So he won u. a. in 2000 in Basel , where he defeated the then aspiring Roger Federer 6: 2, 4: 6, 7: 6, 1: 6 and 6: 1 in the final.

In addition, Enqvist was with Sweden in 1997 in the Davis Cup final .

Despite his talent, he could not build on the achievements of Stefan Edberg , Mats Wilander and Björn Borg . Persistent injury concerns drove Enqvist to retire from his career. On April 20, 2006, he announced his departure from professional tennis to the daily newspaper Svenska Dagbladet .
