Brett Steven (born April 27, 1969 in Auckland ) is a retired New Zealand tennis player .
Life
Steven graduated from Southern Methodist University in Dallas and turned pro in 1988. In 1990 he won the Challenger tournament in Canberra , the following year he won his first double title on the ATP World Tour at the side of Gianluca Pozzi in Newport . He won a total of nine double titles alongside various partners and made it into a final eight more times.
In 1993 he was in the final of the Schenectady ATP tournament , but lost to Thomas Enqvist . In the course of his career he reached two more individual finals, but he never won a tournament. He reached his highest ranking in the tennis world rankings in 1996 with position 32 in singles and 1995 with position 16 in doubles.
His best individual result in a Grand Slam tournament was reaching the quarter-finals at the Australian Open in 1993, in which he was defeated by Pete Sampras . In the doubles competition he reached the semifinals of the French Open in 1995.
Steven played 33 singles and 16 doubles games for the New Zealand Davis Cup team between 1990 and 1999 . In the 2-3 defeat against Australia in the quarterfinals in 1990 he was able to win his first individual against John Fitzgerald in five sets, in the second individual he lost to Wally Masur .
At the 1996 Summer Olympics , he went to New Zealand, but was eliminated in the first round against Arnaud Boetsch .
