Wallace "Wally" Masur (born May 13, 1963 in Southampton , Hampshire , England ) is a former Australian tennis player .

Career

Masur began tennis at the age of eight and was educated at the Australian Institute of Sport as an adolescent . In 1981, at the age of 18, he won the junior doubles competition at the Australian Open alongside his compatriot Craig Miller . In the same year he became national Australian junior champion and 1982 professional tennis player. In his career he won three ATP tournaments in singles and 16 doubles titles. He won his individual title at the ATP tournament in Hong Kong in 1983 , in Adelaide in 1987 and in Newport in 1988 . In doubles he was victorious alongside several players. His partners included Petr Korda , Pat Cash and Emilio Sánchez . He reached his highest world rankings in 1993 with 8th place in doubles and 15th in singles.

His greatest successes in Grand Slam tournaments were semi-finals at the Australian Open and the US Open . At the Australian Open in 1987 he defeated Boris Becker in the round of 16 and finally lost to Stefan Edberg in three sets. At the US Open he defeated Tomás Carbonell , Patrik Kühnen and Magnus Larsson , among others , before losing to Cédric Pioline . In doubles he was twice in the semi-finals at the French Open ; In 1998 he lost to the side of his compatriot Mark Woodforde John Fitzgerald and Anders Järryd , in 1992 he was eliminated with Mark Kratzmann against the Swiss Jakob Hlasek and Marc Rosset after they had eliminated the Australian top duo Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde in the round of 16 . He was also in the semi-finals in mixed, twice at the French Open and once at the Australian Open.

Masur played 30 singles and two doubles games for the Australian Davis Cup team between 1985 and 1993 ; his Davis Cup balance shows 17:15 wins. He competed for Australia in singles in the Olympic Games in 1988 and 1992 . In 1988 he reached the second round with a win over Luiz Mattar , in which he was defeated by Carl-Uwe Steeb , in 1992 he failed in the first round to Pete Sampras .
