John Basil Fitzgerald OAM (born December 28, 1960 in Cummins ) is a retired Australian tennis player .

Career

Fitzgerald grew up on a farm in Cockaleechie , South Australia . It was not until the age of 15 that he took part in the national championships. He won a total of six individual titles on the ATP World Tour , with his greatest successes in doubles and mixed . His most frequent doubles partner was Anders Järryd , with whom he won four of his seven Grand Slam titles in doubles.

Fitzgerald played 19 singles and 14 doubles games for the Australian Davis Cup team between 1982 and 1992 . He achieved two victories with the team: in 1983 Australia beat Sweden 3-2, Fitzgerald won his individual against Joakim Nyström and lost to Mats Wilander . 1986 the opponent was again Sweden, again Australia won 3-2; this time Fitzgerald only competed in doubles, alongside Mark Edmondson he defeated Stefan Edberg and Anders Järryd . In 1990 he came again in a Davis Cup final used, in the 3-2 defeat by the United States he was defeated on the side of Pat Cash Rick Leach and Jim Pugh . At the Olympic Games in 1988 and 1992 , he competed for Australia. In 1988 in Seoul he started singles and doubles; he was already defeated in the first round to the Canadian Grant Connell , together with Darren Cahill he reached the second round, in which they were defeated by the New Zealanders Kelly Evernden and Bruce Derlin . In 1992 he stepped alongside Todd Woodbridge , but they failed in the second round to Ramesh Krishnan and Leander Paes , who were playing for India .
