Tom Nijssen (born October 1, 1964 in Maastricht ) is a former Dutch tennis player who was particularly successful in doubles and mixed .

Life

Nijssen became a professional tennis player in 1984 and reached the quarter-finals of the Challenger Tournament in Agadir the following year . In 1986 he stood alongside Johan Vekemans in the final of the Hilversum ATP tournament . He won his first double title in Tokyo in 1987 . He played with changing partners until 1990, after which he played successfully with Cyril Suk for several years . Together they won seven double titles, including three tournaments in the ATP Championship Series . They were in a final six more times, including the Masters tournament in Stockholm and the Paris Masters . From 1991 to 1994 both ended the year in the top 10 and thus qualified for the ATP World Tour Finals . In 1998 he was in Auckland at the side of Jeff Tarango for the last time in a final. In total, Nijssen won 16 double titles in the course of his career, 14 more times he was in a double-final. He reached his highest ranking in the tennis world rankings in 1989 with position 87 in singles and 1992 with position ten in doubles.

His best individual result in a Grand Slam tournament was reaching the third round of the Australian Open . His best results in the doubles competition were quarter-finals at the Australian Open, the French Open and Wimbledon . He was more successful in mixed . At the side of Manon Bollegraf , he won the French Open in 1989 and the US Open in 1991 . In addition, both were in the 1993 Wimbledon final. Together with Helena Suková , he was in the 1992 US Open final.

Nijjsen played 14 singles and three doubles games for the Dutch Davis Cup team between 1986 and 1990 . In the 2: 3 defeat against Germany in the first round of the world group in 1990, he was able to win his singles against Michael Stich , but after the doubles the Netherlands were already unmatched 3-0. Nijssen was previously defeated against Carl-Uwe Steeb and alongside Michiel Schapers against Stich and Eric Jelen .
