Leonardo Lavalle (born July 14, 1967 in Mexico City ) is a retired Mexican tennis player . In 2014 he was the team principal of the Mexican Fed Cup team .

Life

Lavalle attended high school in the United States . In 1984 he won the US Open junior tournament in doubles alongside Mihnea-Ion Năstase . The following year he won the individual competition at Wimbledon . He was older than Boris Becker , who won the men's tournament that same year.

In 1985 he became a professional tennis player and won his first Challenger tournament in San Luis Potosí . In 1986 he won an ATP tournament for the first time together with Mike Leach . After another double tournament victory in 1987, he reached the final of the Frankfurt Cup in 1988 after victories over Anders Järryd and Henri Leconte , in which he was defeated by Tim Mayotte . In 1991 he won his only individual title on the ATP World Tour when he won the Tel Aviv tournament as a qualifier . In total, he was able to win five double titles in the course of his career. He reached his highest ranking in the tennis world rankings in 1986 with position 51 in singles and 1992 with position 23 in doubles.

His best individual result at a Grand Slam tournament was reaching the round of 16 at the Australian Open in 1989. In 1991, he reached the round of 16 at the US Open , the semi-finals at the French Open and the final of the doubles competition at Wimbledon, where he was alongside Javier Frana was defeated against John Fitzgerald and Anders Järryd.

Lavalle played 38 singles and 19 doubles games for the Mexican Davis Cup team between 1985 and 1999 . In the first round match against Germany in 1986 he lost his first game against Boris Becker , but contributed to the 3-2 victory with his wins in doubles and in the decisive single game against Michael Westphal .

At the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona , he played for Mexico and was eliminated in the quarterfinals against the eventual silver medalist Jordi Arrese .
