Steve Denton (born September 5, 1956 in Kingsville , Texas ) is a retired American tennis player .

Career

Denton was in six singles finals, none of which he could win. In doubles, he reached 43 finals, in which he celebrated 19 wins. He achieved most of the double titles with Kevin Curren .

In 1981 and 1982 Denton was in the final of the Australian Open , both finals won by Johan Kriek . In 1983 Denton and his compatriot Sherwood Stewart made it into the double finals; However, they were defeated by the Australians Mark Edmondson and Paul McNamee 3: 6 and 6: 7.

With Kevin Curren, Denton managed to win the US Open in 1982 with a five-set win over the Americans Victor Amaya and Hank Pfister .

From 1984 to 1997 Denton held the record for the fastest serve with 222.1 km / h , before Mark Philippoussis topped it  with 228.5 km / h.
