Henry "Hank" Pfister (born October 9, 1953 in Bakersfield , California ) is a retired American tennis player .

Life

Pfister played his first game on the ATP Tour in 1975 . In January 1976 he was in a double-final for the first time, but in Birmingham he was defeated at the side of Dennis Ralston to the favored Jimmy Connors and Erik van Dillen . At the end of the year he achieved his first tournament victory with Butch Walts . In total, he won nine double titles on the ATP Tour in 22 finals, most of them with his compatriot Victor Amaya . With this he was also in the finals of the double masters held in London in 1981 . He won his first individual title in Maui in 1981 with a win against Tim Mayotte . He won his second and final individual title the following year in Newport . He reached his highest ranking in the tennis world rankings in 1983 with position 19 in singles and 1982 with position 13 in doubles.

His best individual result in a Grand Slam tournament was reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open , which he achieved three times between 1978 and 1982. In his semi-finals in 1981, he threw the number 1 seed Guillermo Vilas out of the tournament in the third round . He celebrated further individual successes at the Wimbledon Championships , where he made it to the round of 16 three times, but failed in 1978 to Vitas Gerulaitis , 1980 to Jimmy Connors and 1982 to John McEnroe . The greatest successes of his career were the double victories at the French Open in 1978 and 1980. In addition, he stood next to John Sadri in the final of the Australian Open in 1981 , where it set a clear defeat against the local heroes and defending champions Mark Edmonson and Kim Warwick . In 1982 he was defeated in five sets at the side of Victor Amaya in the final of the US Open against Kevin Curren and Steve Denton .
