Gene Mayer (born April 11, 1956 in Flushing ) is a retired American tennis player .

The right-hander won 14 singles and 15 doubles titles in his career. He played forehand and backhand with both hands and achieved his best placement on the ATP world rankings on October 6, 1980 with place 4.

Career

Mayer grew up in Wayne , New Jersey , and played tennis at the local Wayne Valley High School . He remained undefeated during his two-year tenure on the tennis school team.

Between 1982 and 1983 he played a total of three games for the US Davis Cup team . He won four of his six individual games.

In 2005 he was inducted into the Naussau County Sports Hall of Fame .

His older brother Sandy was also a professional tennis player, who achieved his best world ranking with position 7 in 1982. The two met in the 1981 final of the Stockholm Open ; together they won five doubles tournaments, including the 1979 French Open .
