Jan Kodeš (born March 1, 1946 in Prague ) is a former Czechoslovak tennis player .
He won three Grand Slam tournaments in the early 1970s .
Kodeš 'first major triumph was on Roland Garros' Ashes Square in Paris at the French Open . He won there in 1970 when he beat Željko Franulović 6-2, 6-4 and 6-0. The following year he defended his title against Ilie Năstase before winning on grass at Wimbledon in 1973 . First, he recorded a victory in the semifinals against Roger Taylor and prevailed in the subsequent final against Alexander Metreweli . Kodeš could not repeat these victories in Paris and Wimbledon , he never competed at the Australian Open . At the US Open in New York he was in the finals in 1971 and 1973 .
His highest ranking was position 4 in September 1973, he won a total of eight singles and 17 doubles titles. In 1990 he was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame . He also received a fair play award from the Czech Olympic Committee.
