Karl Meiler (born April 30, 1949 in Erlangen , † April 17, 2014 in Augsburg ) was a German tennis player and coach.
Career
Karl Meiler led the German tennis rankings as number 1 for five years between 1974 and 1979. In the 1970s and early 1980s he represented German tennis together with Hans-Jürgen Pohmann and Jürgen Faßbender , and later also Uli Pinner . Karl Meiler won four ATP titles in singles, a. a. against Jimmy Connors in Omaha in 1974 and against Guillermo Vilas in Buenos Aires in 1972 . He also reached 14 individual ATP finals. At the German Open in 1973 he reached the final, but was defeated by the American Eddie Dibbs . Karl Meiler was even more successful with 17 doubles titles, especially with Jürgen Faßbender and Wojciech Fibak . With Fibak he won the ATP doubles world championship in Kansas City in 1976. He also played for 13 years (1967-1979) for the German Davis Cup team . Karl Meiler co-founded the Association of Tennis Professionals in 1971 .
From 1985 to 1997 Karl Meiler was national coach and responsible for the B-team. These included Michael Stich , Carl-Uwe Steeb , Bernd Karbacher , David Prinosil , Jens Knippschild and Rainer Schüttler . He then worked as a private trainer for German and Austrian tennis professionals.
Karl Meiler died of the consequences of a fall that had already occurred in his home in November 2013. He has been in a coma ever since.
